According to Cisco VNI, Global mobile data traffic grew 63 percent in 2016. Global mobile data traffic will increase sevenfold between 2016 and 2021. Mobile data traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 47 percent from 2016 to 2021, reaching 49.0 exabytes per month by 2021. Global mobile data traffic reached 7.2 exabytes per month at the end of 2016, up from 4.4 exabytes per month at the end of 2015. (One exabyte is equivalent to one billion gigabytes, and one thousand petabytes.)
Mobile operators deal with +60% annual growth of media traffic.
Mobile networks are becoming video networks. With video playing the leading role in terms of traffic and subscriber volumes, Mobile Operators need a scalable solution to deliver high-quality, immersive video experiences.
The current mobile network architecture is dealing primarily with the dialogue with the end user equipment. Data caching for cellular network usage is rarely performed, and even so at the operator’s central servers, and in best cases on the EPC. This concept requires huge investments in giant server’s farms and enormous costs of super high speed data lines from the data source to the eNB level. Even after those investments QoE (quality of Experience) is relatively poor causing latencies and streaming interrupts.
Current systems produce huge quantities of logs related to the most detailed system performance. The data is gathered, stored and analyzed in the EPC or Central Operators site level. Therefore, currently assigning priorities to end users is not using the related data and is not optimized, which again affects the QOE.
Multi-Access Edge Computing
MEC enables the deployment of a powerful video delivery infrastructure for mobile networks by deploying video services at the radio edge, in close proximity to mobile users.
Vimmi’s MEC solution allows for distributed network of many edge PoPs (Points of Presence) on eNode-B’s(eNB) for mobile networks – not needing to compromise and be limited to deploying few large server farms while, offloading traffic over the backbone internet cellular networks and providing reduced load on PoPs and network connections, altogether supporting superb network efficiencies and content delivery performance. Distributed system with inherent self-management and routing of content consumption requests, providing self-adaptation of system configuration and resources usage, throughout live learning of network and PoPs servers’ status and usage.
Vimmi’s Mobile Delivery Network is a sophisticated system that will enable Mobile operators deal with the +60% annual growth of media traffic while investing drastically less (up to 30% annually) in the relevant infrastructure cost. Yet, significantly improve QoE (quality of experience) and reduced RTT (Round Trip Time) of media consumption (mainly video) of mobile (cellular connected) end users.
Vimmi’s MDN solution uses grid computing and machine learning technologies that enables delivery of premium video quality at a dramatically lower operational cost. The solution reduces 70%-90% of mobile backhaul traffic while improving QoE. It reduces Round Trip Time for Video and IoT Applications achieving 5G performance targets in 4G networks.
