The NEED:

According to Cisco VNI, Global mobile data traffic grew 63 percent in 2016. Global mobile data traffic will increase sevenfold between 2016 and 2021. Mobile data traffic will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 47 percent from 2016 to 2021, reaching 49.0 exabytes per month by 2021. Global mobile data traffic reached 7.2 exabytes per month at the end of 2016, up from 4.4 exabytes per month at the end of 2015. (One exabyte is equivalent to one billion gigabytes, and one thousand petabytes.)

Mobile networks are becoming video networks. With video playing the leading role in terms of traffic and subscriber volumes, Mobile Operators need a scalable solution to deliver high-quality, immersive video experiences.

The current mobile network architecture is dealing primarily with the dialogue with the end user equipment. Data caching for cellular network usage is rarely performed, and even so at the operator’s central servers, and in best cases on the EPC. This concept requires huge investments in giant server’s farms and enormous costs of super high speed data lines from the data source to the eNB level. Even after those investments QoE (quality of Experience) is relatively poor causing latencies and streaming interrupts.

Current systems produce huge quantities of logs related to the most detailed system performance. The data is gathered, stored and analyzed in the EPC or Central Operators site level. Therefore, currently assigning priorities to end users is not using the related data and is not optimized, which again affects the QOE.

MEC enables the deployment of a powerful video delivery infrastructure for mobile networks by deploying video services at the radio edge, in close proximity to mobile users.
